Welcome in our server closet!
It's very dark in here and a bit moisty,
but we figured you wouldn't mind.
Our Mighty Server called Pingwing
News July 24th, 2007 Pingwing is dead. The poor server was struck by lightning on Sunday afternoon 22 July 2007. Rest in pieces. The worst thing about the sad event was that the harddisk was severely damaged and appeared unusable. Bye bye lots of valuable data. Fortunately, it turned out that it was possible to read the harddisk when it does not get any seek commands. Sequentially copying it to a second hardisk sector by sector worked perfectly. I dug up another old and dusty half-dead PC, inserted the duplicated harddisk, and now Pingwing lives on in another metal body. Pingwing lives!
I expect to acquire a somewhat more decent body for hosting Pingwing, so expect some more downtime the coming week.
July 29th, 2006 Due to a power failure in my city, 'Pingwing' was down for about an hour. Power has just been restored and Pingwing is fully functional again.
July 24rd, 2006 Our mighty server 'Pingwing' has just been offline for about 3 minutes, because the operating system was replaced with an updated version. Last time Pingwing was offline is more than a year ago. Not bad for such an old machine...
July 23rd, 2006 I have been on vacation for a while, far away from internet access. My mailbox was crammed with fan-mail again :) , I will send replies during this week.
June 10th, 2006 No news for a long time... Most of my software projects now have their own homepages hosted on Sourceforge.Net. One application that does not have its own project website yet (MiniDV Assembler) has seen a new release today. You can get it here and have a look at the changelog. Have fun.
January 18th, 2006 Due to several reports of people having problems using unstable BASH 3.1, KDE DVD Authoring wizard has added detection of this BASH version and ask the user to downgrade in case of problems. The new version can be found here.
January 16th, 2006 This time I updated DV Video Assembler to work on KDE 3.5 and added a number of bugfixes.
January 9th, 2006 I just released the big rewrite of KmPg2 which you can also download at kde-apps.org. The new version can read almost any video file and convert it to a nice DVD compatible MPEG2 stream. You can read all the details on kde-apps.org
December 17th, 2005 Well, I really can't keep up with myself.. In the mean time there have been two updates of KDE DVD Authoring Wizard. And.. This little piece of software has made it to the fifth highest rated application on the KDE software repository. I guess some people are having fun using it.. :)
December 3rd, 2005 An update of KDE DVD Authoring Wizard is available. Details and changelog can be found on kde-apps.org.
November 19th, 2005 The KDE DVD Authoring Wizard has been marked stable. The last release (version 0.96) has been renamed to 1.0 Final.
November 13th, 2005 I released another update of 'DVD Rip-O-Matic'. This version allows you to specify a custom size for the generated AVI file. This is very useful when you want to rip multiple titles and make them fit on a single CD or DVD. You can download the new version from the Software Corner or kde-apps.org.
November 13th, 2005 Some update on the progress of the new KmPg2 2.0 for you today. Development KmPg2 2.0 is progressing nicely, the Bash scripts that do the actual work are finished. It can now decode DV, MPEG, DivX, MJPEG, WMV and many, many more video formats/codecs. The video filtering/processing framework that was already present in KmPg2 0.9x turns out to be highly effective for reducing compression artifacts in video files. Low-bitrate video files look really nice when they are converted to MPEG2 files using KmPg2 2.0. I expect to release KmPg2 version 1.95 within two weeks or so.
September 27th, 2005 Yeehah. The first public release of KmPg2 has arrived! KmPg2 is a user friendly MPEG2 encoder wizard that uses the video processing / encoding technology of MJPEGTools 1.7.0. The goal of the project is to allow anybody to create high quality DVD compliant MPEG2 streams without any required technical knowledge. Please leave your comments on the KDE project-page.
August 29th, 2005 Another bugfix release of KDE DVD Authoring Wizard has been released! Please test and report any problems on kde-apps.org.
August 22nd, 2005 Woaah! Look what I got: New shoes!
August 17th, 2005 Several bugfix releases of KDE DVD Authoring Wizard have emerged on kde-apps.org. Thanks a lot for everybody who has been involved in testing this toy!
August 9th, 2005 Today, I released the first official public version of the KDE DVD Authoring Wizard. This wizard will help you create your own DVD disks. As always, you can find more info, screenshots and a download link at kde-apps.org and in my own Software Corner.
July 19th, 2005 De vakantie foto's van Evelien en Marieke zijn uitgezocht en vanaf vandaag op deze website verkrijgbaar! Je vind de foto's in het digitale fotoalbum.
Yes, that message was in Dutch. I won't do that again, promise.. :))
July 15th, 2005 Our server has been down for about 24 hours due to a harddisk failure. The problem has been fixed ( well, sort of.. ) and we apologise for the inconvenience.
May 9th, 2005 I released another update of 'DV Assembler'. Just go to the Software Corner. Happy video editing!
May 3rd, 2005 An update of 'DV Assembler' is available.
May 1st, 2005 I just uploaded the first release of 'DV Assembler'. You can download it from the Software Corner, or from kde-apps.org. It is a simple video editing application that can append multiple DV Video files with nice looking transition effects, like cross-fade, zoom, blur, and so on. It will also create cross-fade audio transitions when needed. One more neat feature: It only touches the head and tail parts of the original video files that are needed to create the transition effects. The rest of the video is left untouched, which means zero quality loss.
March 20th, 2005 It looks like my 'DVD Rip-O-Matic' Wizard made it to the top-4 of the highest rated KDE applications on KDE-Apps.org. The future of Kommander looks even a bit more bright than it already did.. :)
March 14th, 2005 Released an update of 'DVD Rip-O-Matic'. This version is a first attempt to fully support ripping NTSC movies. Please test and report succes or failure to me. You can download the new version from the Software Corner.
March 7th, 2005 Released an update of 'DVD Rip-O-Matic'. You can download it from the Software Corner.
March 4th, 2005 Today I released 'DVD Rip-O-Matic', an easy to use DVD ripping application. It's available on this website as well as on kde-apps.org. It seems people like it a lot! I plan to release more applications in the near future. See the Software Corner page to see what's to come.
Februari 2005 Finished the Software Corner page about the digital video processing applications I'm working on.
About this website
This website is hosted on a Gentoo Linux Server, in a closet at home. It's a very basic server which offers some services for personal use, like:
- Fast internet access for both of our desktop computers
- Automated download and installation of software updates for all three computers at home
- Secure world-wide file access to our personal stuff
- Private E-Mail server. Finally, 'unlimited' storage space!
- Download server, for transfering large files at night
In case you were wondering what that penguin is doing at the top of the site, look here. The name of the server, 'pingwing', is a Dutch mis-spelling of the word 'penguin'.
